Sacramento Electrical Issues Found By Sacramento Home Inspectors

Sacramento ElectricalThis Sacramento Electrical panel was manufactured by Zinsco-Sylvania, and employs breakers and other components that are alleged to be defective. The original manufacturer is now out of business, but there have been enough reports of defects that are serious enough for me to recommend replacing the panel or having a licensed Sacramento electrician evaluate it thoroughly by removing and examining its breakers and bus bars.

When researching electrical hazards on the internet, Zinsco or Zinsco-Sylvania products have been cited multiple times. There have been several hazards regarding Zinsco electrical components, circuit breakers and electrical panels. This includes Sylvania electrical panels and breakers which are of the same product design and origin.

These circuit breakers do not offer the same or better fire and overcurrent protection as other brands. Obviously, this translates into an increased risk of fire or electrical hazard. There have been cases involving arcing, electrical burns and equipment blow outs observed by field electricians. Experts believe that the point of failure appears to be the contact point between circuit breaker contact clip and the electrical panel bus. This information has been shared with the U.S. CPSC and other electrical failure researchers and educators. This electrical equipment/devices need replacement by a qualified, license electrician.

Here are some safety tips regarding faulty devices and electrical hazards in general:

1. You may visually inspect your electrical equipment to observe for evidence of blackened or charred marks. Make sure you’re not standing in water when touching the panel or breakers! If you notice anything obvious or suspicious-DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR REPAIR ANYTHING-this could cause electrocution or death. Call a qualified Sacramento electrical inspector.

2. If you actually see fire or smoke, get everyone to safety and call 911 immediately!

3. If you have any Zinsco or Sylvania equipment (indicated by characteristic red and blue-colored circuit breaker toggle switches) call a Sacramento electrical inspector for inspection and probable replacement.

4. Make sure you have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your Sacramento home.

5. Turn off unsafe or questionable electrical equipment, particularly if there’s a suspicion of overheating devices, hot electrical cords or flickering lights.

6. To confirm faulty electrical equipment, devices or inspection of Zinsco/Sylvania devices, you should hire a Sacramento electrical inspector who is familiar with these hazards.
