Sacramento Fireplace Issues Found By Sacramento Home Inspectors

Sacramento FireplaceOur Sacramento fireplace inspector noted a gas jet and/or log lighter is present in the fireplace.  Because of the chance of improper venting, we suggest installing a “damper stop” to prevent the damper from going into the full closed position, allowing the elements of combustion to enter the dwelling.

Sacramento home inspector reminded residents to be careful while using their fireplaces during the cold weather season.

We suggest having your chimneys examined regularly by a Sacramento fireplace inspector for any creosote buildup that would result in a possible chimney fire. Chimneys should be inspected yearly and cleaned by a reputable company at the beginning of the heating season.

Also, metal chimneys should be inspected by a Sacramento fireplace inspector for damage to the metal piping and to ensure all connections are secure. In addition to the firebox, masonry chimneys should be inspected for cracks to the masonry or damaged mortar joints.

The interior of the chimney should be inspected for any damage. Blockage in the chimney would cause deadly carbon monoxide to enter the living space of the home while in use.

Many people in the United States die due to accidental, non-fire related exposure to carbon monoxide.  Thousands of Americans require emergency medical care annually due to poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When cleaning fireplaces and wood stoves,  ashes should be discarded in a metal container with a lid and placed outside away from the home and away from combustible materials.

Owners should never put ashes in a paper or plastic bag, a cardboard box, a plastic trash container, or any other combustible container. Homeowners should also never place a container of discarded ashes on any combustible material, such as a wood or composite deck, in a mulched area, or in a garage.

Fireplace ashes may contain hot embers for many days after the flames are out.  There are many destructive house fires in Sacramento County caused by improper disposal of fireplace ashes every year.

Sacramento Fireplace ChimneyNo spark arrestor visible. We suggest adding a spark arrestor with an integral rain cap for fire safety and to prevent water in the chimney.

A spark arrestor should help slow sparks exiting the chimney and help prevent pest entry.
